My father James Gregg served on HMS Exeter as a young man of just 17 during the Battle of the Java Sea and became a Japanese POW at Celebes. He was a gunner with his armoury the last to go out of action. After recuperation in Perth, Western Australia he returned to England where he met my mother Mary at another convalescence home. They married and returned to Belfast,
Northern Ireland where he worked in the local bakery for the rest of his life. They had three sons and one daughter. My father rarely talked about his experiences in the camp and preferred to move on with life. He did once tell me that a beautiful ivory palace he bought on route to the Java sea went down with the ship. He died in 1986 aged 60 from lung cancer. Only as I get older do I appreciate the sacrifices all those brave young men made. Please contact Andy (webmaster) with any information. |
