Cyril Donovan Grenfell

Able Seaman
Service no. 68831

My father Cyril Donovan Grenfell survived the sinking of the Exeter and was sent to Macassar in the Celebes.
He suffered from malnutrition, malaria, dysentery, beriberi and tropical ulcers. He had scars on his legs and back from beatings given by the Japanese.
He was a talented man with his hands and I believe he made a stethoscope for the doctor as well as various other items whilst in the prison camp.
He was friends with 2 other survivors, John Alexander Campbell of East London, South Africa and Victor Albert Horwell of Surrey, UK.
After the war he returned to South Africa and married Cythia Ethne Larkan, they had 4 children, Geoffrey, Clive, Gary and Lynda.
Sadly on the 20/05/1973 at the age of 53 he passed away from illness attributed to his time in the prison camp.

Date of birth 10th January 1920
Date of death 20th May 1973 in South Africa
