John Scott Rickcord

Midshipman

My cousin John Scott Rickcord died while serving on HMS Exeter:
He was the fourth son of Commander Percival Scott Rickcord RN and his wife, Charlotte. He was born on 28 November 1919 at The Mount, Warlingham, Surrey, and was educated at St. George's College and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He underwent training aboard the cruisers HMS Erebus and HMS Vindictive.
He was appointed Midshipman on board HMS Exeter on the South Atlantic Station on 9 June 1938. He took part in relief operations for the victims of the Chilean earthquake in December 1938.

John was killed aboard the Exeter during the Battle of the River Plate during the operation against the Battleship Graf von Spee on 13 December 1939. He was buried at sea.

Sadly, John's younger brother, Sergeant-Pilot Anthony George Rickcord RAF, was killed with all his crew when his aircraft was shot down over Hamburg on 28 June 1941. Anthony's Commonwealth War Graves Commission record is also listed below.
